What to see and do
Aalen is the largest town in Germany’s Ostwürttemberg region, with an area of more than 90 square miles. Its history, which can be traced at the Aalen Limes Museum and the Geological-Paleontological Museum, dates back to early civilisation. The former museum was built on the site of a large Roman cavalry fort, while the later is housed in the historical town hall. Modern things to see in Aalen include the Aalen Observatory, Windpark Waldhausen and the Reichsstädter Brunnen fountain.
However, Aalen’s historical landmarks, such as the late Baroque Evangelical-Lutheran St Nicholas’ Church, the timber-framed Civic Asylum and the market square, are its main draws. No trip to Aalen is complete without visiting the Limes-Thermen hot springs or attending one of its annual events, such as the Roman Festival (September) or the Aalen Jazzfest (November).
