Alicante-Elche Airport in Spain is the gateway for many different places and its location within an arms reach of so many other well notable cities makes it a top destination for those who want to see what Spain has to offer. 9km from Alicante, 70 km (43 mi) north of Murcia, 10 km (6.2 mi) east of Elche, and 160km (99 mi)  from Valencia, a ton of different routes are easily accessible for the RV. With good roads and not much elevation gain, this area of Spain makes it a great journey with many sightseeing opportunities – get your camera out!

The city of Alicante itself is a Mediterranean port with tons of history around it that would give many people a great story as they enjoy their trip and contemplate on its docks. It is the second-largest Valencian city with over 462 thousand residents and its history reaches back 7000 years ago, making anyone interested in the history and culture of Spain pleased to learn from. No visit would be complete without seeing the great Santa Bárbara castle on Mount Benacantil, known for its incredible views and gorgeous architecture. L’Ereta Park is a great park situated at the foothills of Mount Benacantil that is worth the visit on the journey up or down. Basilica of Santa María was built in 14th-16th centuries, and features a great gothic styles that brings in thousands of visitors each month. There are dozens of museums in Alicante, one of which,  Archaeological Museum of Alicante, features artifacts reaching over 100,000 years ago.  The Barrio de la Santa Cruz is an area of Alicante that leads to the castle Santa Bárbara.  Don’t forget to see Explanada de España, one of the most gorgeous promenades in all of Spain as well!

Some scenic drives for a lot of people is to drive to Elche, 23 km from Alicante and has the largest forest of palm trees in Europe.  Many people also take the 28 km from Alicante to Novelda, a city with many gorgeous and well known landmarks.

 

Many famous drives are the Autopista AP-7, the famous 911 km long Mediterranean coastal drive that leads through Alicante. Also, the Autopista Alicante-Murcia  AP-37, running to Murcia provides gorgeous views and wonderful destination. Don’t forget to take the Autovía A-31! This runs from Alicante to Madrid, Spain’s most famous city. Driving here provides a great gateway to the rest of Spain. With very well built roads and major motorways navigating their way through the gorgeous landscapes of Spain, it’s easy for one to hop in an RV and enjoy some of the Spanish sun and cruise through or to many of its magnificent and historic cities.

Alicante-Elche Airport is the sixth busiest airport in Spain, boasting around 75,000 flights a year and transiting almost 10 million passengers. This fact makes it one of the 50 busiest airports in Europe. Almost 80 percent of its passengers are international, most of which come from Ireland, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. Opening in May 1967, and only transiting Alicante-Madrid and Alicante-Barcelona, it is now a host to many European destinations. Undergoing many renovations over the years, it has transformed itself into a modern and nicely equipped airport with over 38 airlines making stops in it. Some of the flights going as far as St. Petersburg, Russia and beyond. As always, Ryanair hosts the most amount of passengers per year, as the boom with Ryanair’s cheap cost is known to do. However, with so many flights going in and out of Alicante-Elche Airport, it’s a safe bet that if one is to fly into this airport you are within an hours reach or less of something wonderful. Being only 160 km (99 mi) south of Valencia and 9 km (5.6 mi) southwest of Alicante itself, make this one of your stops on your RV journey.
