The coastal city of Almeria, in Andalusia province of Spain, is easily reached by air via Almeira Airport, just nine kilometers from the resort. Las Salinas beaches, small isolated coves and the charms of the laid-back city itself, with its ancient churches, monasteries and palaces, are all good reasons to visit.
Andalusia, home to Granada with its magnificent Alhambra Palace, the wild central region with its picturesque villages and a good selection of camp sites, is Spain’s most romantic province. The spectacular deserts, beaches and the mountains of the Sierra Nevada can all be reached by renting a motorhome.
Best campervan drives starting from Almeria
Almeria – Cordoba – Seville – Jerez – Cadiz:
this drive, mostly on the A4 highway, takes in four of Andalusia’s best-known cities and can include Granada as its first overnight stop. UNESCO-listed Cordoba: Seville, the heart of flamenco: Jerez, the home of sherry; and the ancient port city of Cadiz all have nearby campsites, with Cordoba’s Camping El Brillante and Caravanning La Rosaleda in Cadiz both popular.
Almeria – Sierra de Baza Natural Park:
the 160km drive from Almeira on the A92 to the Sierra de Baza Natural Park skirts the Sierra Nevada mountain range, giving spectacular views across wild countryside. The park is a haven for birdlife, boasting golden eagles, Egyptian vultures and many other species. The park has two designated camp grounds, and the Altiplana Tipis RV site is nearby.
Almeria to Girona:
this almost entirely coastal drive on the A7 and AP7 runs the length of Spain’s Mediterranean coast, almost to the French border and passing through Alicante, Valencia and Barcelona. Great sea views are its highlight, and campervan sites are plentiful, from Almeria’s Camping la Giroffa to the beachside Campsite Treumel in Girona.
About the Almeria airport
Just a short drive from Almeria’s city centre is the modern Almeria Airport, with its single terminal set back from the A7 motorway that links the coastal cities. The majority of routes are seasonal, although EasyJet and Ryanair run year-round flights to London-Gatwick and Stansted and East Midlands International, respectively.
Thomas Cook and Thomson offer seasonals charters to Almeria, and Monarch flies in-season from Birmingham and Manchester. National flag carrier Iberia, the only full-service carrier operating at the airport, offers domestic flights to Seville and Madrid. Three international vehicle hire companies are located here.
